Herbal Support for Feminized Labor: Heartbreak and Grief

Heartbreak and Grief are some of our most powerful teachers. Loss takes many forms – or perhaps there are many shapes of absence. The plants you’ll meet in this class are helpful for the loss of a living person, a relationship, a piece of oneself, or a period of time. We all cope with painful learning in different ways, so we’ll discuss several kinds of responses that can come up with these experiences as well as techniques to help ourselves and each other survive them.

The Queerness of Magic, The Magic of Queerness with Lee Harrington

The Queerness of Magic, The Magic of Queerness with Lee Harrington

Many pagan and magic-based paths are not LGBTQ+ focused, and yet magic in and of itself has a queer nature. In this class we will discuss queer deities throughout history, as well as the ancestors that can be drawn upon outside of bloodlines, while acknowledging the power of ourselves being outside of, between, or embracing multiple layers of orientation, identity, and experience. We will explore queering and queered magics, from turning rituals that already exist into ones that center queer experience to creating or embracing rituals and paths specifically for those of us who walk these paths. This class is open to anyone drawn to learn more about these topics, share their own personal experiences, be around peers, or become an ally through looking at the expansive nature of magic beyond boundaries.

The class will be directly after the book signing for "Queer Magic: Power Beyond Boundaries."

Lee Harrington is an eclectic artist, spiritual and erotic educator, gender radical, and published author on human sexuality and spiritual experience.  Part of the international sex positive communities since 1995, and pagan communities since 1992, his stories make people laugh while showing you that eroticism and magic can be as serious, sexy, or silly as you make it.  His books include "Sacred Kink: The Eightfold Paths of BDSM and Beyond," "Traversing Gender: Understanding Transgender Realities," and co-edited the recent anthology "Queer Magic: Power Beyond Boundaries," among many other projects. You can learn more about Lee, and access his blog, podcast, videos, and free resources at www.PassionAndSoul.com

Home Skills/Herbal Support for Feminized Labor with Brunem Warshaw of Well Deep Remedies

Home Skills explores a small corner of the kitchen arts, house cleaning, space creation, and home remedies for common ailments. Homebodies are invited to leave the house for a wild night out learning about how to appreciate our access to the human right of housing. We’ll discuss techniques to facilitate feelings of safety, freshness, and intentionality in your home. There will be instructions for disability-affirming cleaning practices and herbal housekeeping. We will deepen our toolkit for responding to colds and depletion from the stresses of the world, receive recipes, and make a protective potion to keep your personal space clear and nurturing. Plants are woven through every aspect of this lesson!

Invitational Note from the teacherHome Skills is one class in a series of six classes called Herbal Support for Feminized Labor. These workshops are an invisibly-disabled white femme clinical herbalist’s approach to bringing magic and medicine into historically feminized and often unwaged work. I come from a queer experience and want to acknowledge the legacy of countless brilliant ancestor femmes who have created the possibility of these workshops. I will do everything I can to facilitate safety for marginalized femmes who attend these classes. I would be appreciative of feedback in preparation for any of these classes to help meet your access needs. However, this is not an exclusive or separatist space. I welcome participants of all identities who hold a heart’s stake in doing/understanding this kind of work. Join us for one workshop or the entire series!

Donations toward the scholarships are also welcome, regardless if you would like to register for a class. If you are interested in attending the entire series of 6 classes (a value of $180 minimum), you can register for a discounted rate of $150. Bear in mind that each one of these classes has a take-home herbal medicine along with 2.5 hours of activities and information-sharing. Please reach out if you have any questions about this system!

Consent and Conflict Resolution in Festival Culture Sponsored by Hexenfest.

Consent and Conflict Resolution in Festival Culture Sponsored by Hexenfest.

Festivals can be a wonderful way to step out of our everyday world and envision, for a time, an alternative culture. How do we want to celebrate our time on this earth? How do we want to take care of one another? How might we resolve our conflicts? In light of the rampant abuses in our culture at large, Hexenfest is committed to creating an environment that prioritizes the safety and well-being of all participants.

This evening will be divided into two parts:

1) Consent. What does it look like? How can we practice consent culture while still preserving flirtatious spontaneity? What types of approach are okay and what types are violating?

2) Conflict Resolution. Whenever groups of people gather together, there is potential for conflict; differing viewpoints, misunderstandings, and poor interpretation of boundaries do arise. How can we best navigate these situations? What practices can we put in place to ensure a fair process?

This evening is open to all who have interest in festival culture, and Hexenfest in particular. Hexenfest’s policies will be updated based on this discussion, so if you’d like to weigh in, please join us, and help shape California’s only outdoor Pagan music and arts festival!

-------------------

Sharon Knight is a touring musician, artist, and producer of Hexenfest, a NorCal Pagan Music and Arts Festival with a Bohemian-Gothic vibe.

Let the Moon Come Out: Sewing Together the Goddess Within

This workshop is modeled after handmade doll making in West African traditions where such dolls are manufactured as magical symbols imbued with power.  The objective of this type of craft is to metaphorically return to infancy and work with people and archetypes that were important to us, whether that be our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, nannies, or any other caretaker; as well as characters that influenced our imaginations.  For that we are going to go through a series of steps and rituals that will remind us of stages of fetal creation in our mother’s wombs, and simultaneously create the dolls as we go through those stages.  This journey uses the tools of scissors, needle, and wool, as well as different colors of thread which are selected by our imaginations.

This new symbolic birth allows us to empower the Goddess we carry within for it connects us to our inner girl who is creative, imaginative, happy.  We will also be able to charge this amulet with names of Goddesses who resonate with us.  Following in the West African tradition, we can use colors that are identified with Yoruban deities.

Before the crafting portion of the workshop, we will have a short anthropological discussion and reflection on Latin American water Goddess and ask them to allow us to navigate the river of the creative feminine.

Instructor: Dr. Marisol Cardenas O. holds a PhD in Symbological Anthropology.  She studied at Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana, Mexico.  She specializes in semiotics (the study of signs and symbols and their use and interpretation) of the body, sense, and Latin American and African Pop art.  She has done research in Cuba, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and India.  She is currently a visiting scholar at the UC Berkeley Department of African American and Gender Studies.

Although gentle and nuanced, flower essences are incredibly potent-- helping us realign with our own spiritual centers and opening up portals to mysticism, wholeness, and healing of mind and heart, body and soul. In this class, we'll delve into how to start working with flower essences -- because it's easy to get overwhelmed! -- how to pick them for yourself and your family or clients, how to craft them at home under the influence of sun, moon and stars, and we'll make a blend to take home to take the teachings even deeper.

Dream Portals: Art Show and Reception

Join us in celebrating the heart-opening artwork of Ishka Lha. Show is open beginning 2/15, reception with the artist takes place on 2/25, from 6pm to 8 pm

Ishka reveals a world of the eternal Beauty that is all things.

A river of elementals, cosmic beings, and magical beasts swirl together in one great flood of light and shadow emanating the shapes and colors illuminated within the Beloved’s kaleidoscope. With every turning of the wheel, an ever-changing cycle of Life appears. Dawn spills into the night sky, a blossom falls as a cherry grows; and the movement in our mind trickles down into a land where thoughts kneel before a pool of peaceful waters, watching silently, as Spirit emerges from the depths.

Ishka Lha (pronounced Ee-shka Lha) was born in 1982, and grew up on a ranch atop the rolling hills of northern California, where the quiet natural beauty of her childhood surroundings inspired endless imaginative play and creativity. She earned a professional B.A. for Architecture with an emphasis on natural building and eco-village design at California Polytechnic State University; but, she promptly set her course for the exploration and creation of art as medicine upon graduation. Ishka is part of a growing visionary art movement that is dedicated to the happiness of all beings, and approaches her creative process as a spiritual practice. Her art explores and celebrates the natural radiance inherent in all dimensions of life through the use of neo-traditional iconography and mythology, and she is especially interested in what universal archetypes have most helpfully governed mankind's passage through time into greater avenues of mutual respect, understanding, and heartfelt livelihood. Her work is primarily featured in private collections, galleries, boutiques, and transformational art and music festivals throughout the U.S. and abroad.
